British Club from Bangkok have now been visiting Chiang Mai for 36 years where the compete against Gymkhana Club for the Dick Wood Cup. It is a historical fixtures with family connections that stretch back to the early days of Chiang Mai Gymkhana Club which is now celebrating its 120th year.
The home side retained the Dick Wood Cup for the eighth year in a row but 2018 was one of the most closely contested fixtures with Gymkhana Club winning by 21 runs as British Club were bowled out for 175. Richard Young top-scored for the home side with 42 as a long batting order carried Gymkhana Club to 196 for 9 in 30 overs despite two wickets and a run out for the venerable Sir Nicholas White.
The British Club’s opening knight followed with an elegant 30 as the visitors were looking in control with two wickets down before coming undone against the flight and guile merchants. Matt Bray took three for 22 and Young, Ward and Salusbury claimed two wickets apiece.
British Club are looking to the future so it was appropriate that young captain Ben Eastwell was named player of the match for scoring 32 from 34 balls with 3 fours. This time next year we could see a very different result...
