Lanna International School Thailand are generous sponsors of Lanna CC which helps the club to support junior cricket in Chiang Mai. One Sunday morning each year LIST teachers and parents come to Gymkhana to enjoy a family day and to contest their annual match and 24th January was chosen as an appropriate day as young children at the school had started cricket training earlier in the week.

Headmaster Hugh Williams is a great cricket enthusiast and he has worked tirelessly to arrange the parents v teachers match and to introduce cricket into his school so that even the youngest children get a chance to learn the basics and take part in the Sixes Sawasdee Cup which will be held at Prem in early March. CMSCA coaches Martin and Puy Papworth together with Jun Aryi will be visiting the school each week and working in tandem with Headmaster Hugh so that a new generation of youngsters can enjoy playing cricket.

But on Sunday morning it was the children who were watching and their parents and teachers playing cricket as Martin had prepared a lovely turf wicket as well as umpiring, and all involved enjoyed a good morning’s activity as the Parents batted first and scored 103 for 6 in 20 overs. Anthony and Dominic play cricket regularly and opened with a partnership of 29 while Alan and David also shared a good partnership as they tried to build the innings.

The Teachers had a steady bowling attack with Mr Lyndsay taking 2 for 11 in 3 overs but Jonny, who had cleared played before at a high level, hit two fours to take the total above 100 before being run out. Martin and Puy’s daughter Pin played an impressive off-drive to complete the innings and their total seemed to be a competitive one.

The Teachers soon looked in trouble as they slipped to 12 for 3, as young Ting Tang showed off the bowling skills that she has been working on as part of the new Lanna women’s team. Malcolm had learnt his cricket in New Zealand and also played well as he took two wickets but in came Mr Jon and he made batting look easy as he hit the ball very powerfully to make 32 from just 11 balls before retiring.

The Parents kept in the match after Big Jon had left the crease as Jonny claimed two wickets so there was just a chance that the Teachers would get bowled out as Ting Tang and Malcolm finished excellent spells but Mr Alex and Mr Carl batted sensibly after coming together at 84 for 6 and saw their side home to victory by four wickets.

Headmaster Hugh had arranged a trophy and his team had won it as opposing captain Malcolm presented it to man of the day, Big Jon who had proved the difference between the two sides. Lanna Chairman Tom arrived with a picnic lunch for all involved and the club also provided a bar so everybody was happy.

It is hoped that LIST parents and teachers will form a team to take part in Sixes competitions just as the children will play Sawasdee cricket so Lanna International School is now established as a welcome part of the Chiang Mai cricket scene.

And Principal Hugh Williams, to give him his correct title, has written a report for his school’s facebook page and also contributed some photos. It is a wonderful association between Chiang Mai Cricket Club and Lanna International School and we look forward to future joint events as we bring cricket into the community

Lanna Teachers retain the Parent/Teacher Cricket Championship Title

A beautiful Sunday morning at the Chiang Mai Gymkhana Club saw the stage set for the 3rd Annual ‘Parents v Teachers’ Cricket match. With the Parents’ team eagerly determined to seek revenge for last years loss, and a Teachers’ team looking for back-to-back title honours, a healthy crowd gathered to enjoy the day.

The Teachers won the toss and sent the Parents into bat, with Anthony Robertson and ‘Uncle’ Dom Williams getting the Parents off to a good start before a bowling change got the desired effect with Mr Jon bowling Dom, and Malcolm Phillips then bowled at the other end by Mr Lindsay. Mr Tom then surprised everyone, including himself, by brilliantly catching Ant on the boundary and a sustained spell of tight bowling from Mr Warrie, Mr Carl and Mr Lindsay was now making runs hard to find. Johnny Rogerson looked in great touch before getting tragically run out and with Alan Churchill unbeaten on 14 the Parents finished on 103 for 6.

The Teachers’ run chase got off to a disastrous start, with Mr Tom, Mr Matthew, Mr Lindsay and Mr Hugh all going cheaply courtesy of some wonderful bowling from Malcolm Phillips and catching from Johnny Rogerson. The Parents had a scent of victory, but that scent soon wafted into the surrounding golf-course, along with the ball, as man-of-the-match Mr Jon clobbered 32 runs off just 11 balls to put the teachers back into the box seat. Despite another spectacular catch in the outfield by Rose Proux to dismiss Mr Alan, Mr Alex and Mr Carl ably kept their heads with Mr Alex celebrating his birthday by hitting the winning runs with 2 overs to spare. Big thanks to everyone who played, supported and cheered and special thanks to Martin, Puy, Tom and Richard from the Chiang Mai Lanna Cricket Club who helped make the day a successful community event.
